‘POLITEHNICA’ UNIVERSITY OF TIMISOARA

‘Politehnica’ University of Timisoara is one of the biggest and most well-known technical universities in Central and Eastern Europe. It was founded in 1920, a short while after the union of the Romanian territories at the end of the First World War, in response to the need for engineers to aid post-war economic recovery. During its almost 90 years of existence, Politehnica University of Timisoara has produced over 100,000 engineers, whose skills and professional abilities have been and are appreciated both in Romania and abroad.

Academic excellence
At present, Politehnica University of Timisoara has 10 faculties and 4 independent departments, with 15,000 students, 850 teaching staff and 900 administrative and auxiliary staff.

The studies at the Politehnica University of Timisoara are organised in ‘Bologna’ paradigm and comprise all the three cycles: bachelor, master and doctorate.

The portfolio of specialisations, the curricula and the syllabi of the Politehnica University are well attuned to the needs of society, with which the university has cultivated close relationships. In 2007, the societal and business environments — mainly the large transnational companies but also the medium and small ones — benefited from 1,796 graduates and, in 2008, will benefit from about 2,000.

In addition to its good name in education, Politehnica University of Timisoara is also recognised for playing a leading role in Romanian scientific research, with remarkable results both at national and international level.

An important number of research centres and teams of researchers working on different projects have successfully established a scientific research strategy for the university, supported by a number of grants and contracts won by competition. The results of the research are manifest in papers, patents and products, bringing prestige to the university and attracting important funds.

Politehnica University of Timisoara possesses an educational and research infrastructure — both in terms of buildings and equipment — comparable with the most prestigious European universities. The level it has attained is the consequence of funds attracted over the years. For example, €17mn was dedicated to construct a new library, which will be ready for use early in 2009.

One of the main priorities for the Politehnica University was to obtain international affirmation and collaboration. Currently, the university has co-operation agreements with more than 100 universities from all over Europe and also in the USA, Canada and Japan.

Students — at the core of the UPT activities
The students of the university enjoy a modern social campus, comprising a spacious and well-presented cafeteria together with 16 hostels, giving in total 5,500 accommodation places. All of the hostels’ rooms — 1,800 in all — have an internet connection and cable television and, since 2007, new refrigerators and new furniture.

The Politehnica University of Timisoara has developed for its students and employees an excellent sports base, comprising: a sports hall, an indoor swimming pool, a running track, tennis courts, basketball fields, handball fields and mini-football and football fields.

The interpersonal climate in the Politehnica University of Timisoara is one of understanding and mutual respect, creating an ethos that is agreeable and propitious to performance.
