The President of the European Parliament
The European Parliament represents the member states of the European Union and is elected by an absolute majority of votes cast in a secret ballot.
The president’s term of office is two and a half years but can be renewed for a further two and a half year period.
The president directs Parliament’s activities, chairs plenary sittings and approves the budget. In addition, he or she chairs the Bureau and Conference of Presidents. He or she represents Parliament in the outside world and in its relations with the other European Community institutions.
The president's role is equivalent to that of a speaker in a national parliament. The current president, Hans-Gert Pöttering, was elected in 2007 for a two and a half year mandate.

The presidency of the Council of Ministers
The presidency of the Council or to give it its full name the Council of Ministers, is rotated between member states every six months. A minister from the state holding the presidency chairs the Council and the role is often given to a country’s foreign minister
The Council is made up of the relevant national ministers and relates to the topic being discussed. As a result, the country holding the presidency is able to influence the policy direction of the European Union for the six month period of the mandate.
Since 2007, the presidency has been co-ordinated every 18 months by three countries, though one still takes a lead position every 6 months.
